New York University (NYU) Stern offers a combination of opportunities that is hard to find elsewhere. Start with the school’s superb location in downtown Manhattan, making it arguably the best in the world when it comes to industry exposure. Few other programs can match it in terms of faculty, with rockstar professors like Scott Galloway (marketing), Nouriel Roubini (economics), and Aswath Damodaran (finance). Upon graduation, students are admitted into an illustrious, 110,000 strong alumni network of Stern undergraduates, graduates, and PhDs in 130 countries.
Stern’s program stands out in academic offerings as well. Students can choose between 3 programs, a 1-year Fashion & Luxury MBA, a 1-year Tech MBA, or a conventional 2-year MBA. The MBA curriculum is customizable to the core, with a list of just two mandatory courses, three specializations (from 20) and over 200 electives, along with the option to take 25% of the courses at other NYU graduate schools. There is also no shortage of opportunities for globally-minded students, including spending a semester abroad at one of Stern’s 53 partner business schools.
In terms of strengths, Stern is particularly renowned in finance and analytics; US News & World Report ranks it among the leading five schools in the US in finance, real estate, business analytics and information systems. Notably, Stern has unique offerings around entertainment and media and luxury retail that would be hard to find elsewhere. Sternies do not lack social sense; 33% of the MBA class of 2023 had a degree in social sciences, humanities, arts, or another non-quant field, and 17% worked for the government or nonprofit sector, among the highest percentages of all business schools.
With regards to employment, the MBA class of 2021 was most employed in finance with 35%, consulting with 32%, and tech with 19%. Stern is unofficially considered the king of investment banking, with 28% of its graduates choosing to enter this sector in 2021, the highest of any school. Lawyers also attend the school regularly, with 4% of graduating class going into the legal industry. 76% of graduates took jobs in the Northeast, with other locations at or near single digits.
Notable Stern alumni include Tom Freston (Co-Founder and Former CEO of MTV Networks, MBA 1969), Daniel Schulman (President and CEO of PayPal, MBA 1986), Robert Greifeld (Former CEO of Nasdaq, MBA 1987) and Paul Waterman (CEO of Elementis, MBA 1996).
